Graphing in Math

PicMonkey Collage graphing

We have been working on graphing activities in kindergarten. We have been collecting data and organizing it in a variety of ways. The children have had fun asking their friends such questions as “Do you like cats?” or “Do you like pancakes?” and putting a tally mark under yes or no. They counted the tally marks in each column. We have graphs with real things and picture graphs. We have read graphs and made observations from a graph using the terms “more” or “less” or “fewer”. Graphing makes counting and comparing meaningful.

A Day at the Beach

IMG_3615[1]
With all the talk about our up coming March break and many families travelling to some place warm, the children decided to create our very own beach. They have included beach toys, beach umbrellas, sunscreen, towels and shells. They also needed a snack bar with lots of yummy treats and created a list of these. Now, we all wish we were going some place warm!

Outdoor Inquiry with Mr. Martin

Today, Mr. Martin, our Outdoor Environmental Education Coordinator from the School Board visited all the kindergarten classes. Mr. Martin helped us create a list of things we need to survive (sleep, space, food, exercise, etc.). We have been learning lots about fish and realized fish need all these things too. We then played a fun fish game. The Daddy bass fish had to guard his fish eggs from all the predators. Our Daddy bass started with only a few fish eggs and these were eaten very quickly. When he had more eggs, there were more that survived the hungry predators. It was a hard job to look after all those eggs! Thank you to Mr. Martin for sharing with us today.

Happy Birthday Clifford!

IMG_3578[1]We celebrated Clifford’s birthday in room 102 with party hats and treats. We made an ABC book, made a bone pattern, made Clifford from plasticine and made books about the things he can and can’t do. We had so much fun we forgot to sing him Happy Birthday. Oops! Check out our Cliffords in the display case in the school foyer. Thank you to our parent volunteer Mrs. Bourque and our grade 8 helpers from Mr. Davis’ classroom for making our party so much fun.Thank you also for the yummy treats made by our parents.
