100 Days of School

We have been at school for 100 days. We have put up a number for each day we have been at school. Day after day, week after week we have seen these numbers get closer to 100. We had our 100’s day party and visited many classes learning about 100. We drew what we would look like if we were 100 years old and wrote what we might be doing, “sleeping”, “reading books”, “walking with a cane”, “sewing”, etc. We built with 100 books, created gumball machines with 100 gumballs, made necklaces with 100 Fruit Loops and built with 100 things (puzzles, lego, popsicle sticks, etc.). Some of us dressed up to look 100 and decorated our shirts with 100 objects. Counting to 100 is so much fun. Now what can we count? Maybe the count down to the Blue Jays first game!

Worm Chalet and Red Wiggler Worms Have Arrived

Today we had our worm chalet and worms delivered for our Vermicomposting (worm composting). Jessica from the school board, the environmental systems coordinator spoke to us about vermicomposting. Worms eat food waste and paper and digest it into worm castings. Worm castings are rich with nutrients for plant growth. We watched as she set up the chalet and the worm bedding. We learned lots of things about worms. They have 5 hearts each. Jessica said that means there is alot of love in our chalet. Tomorrow we will begin feeding the worms food scraps from our classroom. We all had a chance to hold a worm protecting it from the light and trying to be quiet. We learned some things that are good to feed our worms such as bananas, apple cores, carrots, berries, grapes and egg shells.

Dairy Farmer Visit

We had Charlotte and Daisy the cow visit our school last week. We learned how a cow is milked and what is made from milk. We sorted things that were made of milk and those that were not. We also got a milk mustache to take home.

Winter Fun Day

We finally had enough snow to have our winter fun day. We sled down the hills, painted snow with paint brushes and spray bottles, blew bubbles (for a short time as the bubbles froze on us), made snow forts and played hockey. We then came inside and had hot chocolate with marshmallows to warm us up. Thank you to those families who donated the hot chocolate and marshmallows. Many of us came back for seconds and had more marshmallows than hot chocolate in our cups!

Gung Hay Fat Choy!

We had our Chinese New Year parade last week. We dressed in red (the main colour of the celebration), carried our dragons and musical instruments and paraded through the school wishing all “Gung Hay Fat Choy!”. We wished for a lucky year. Check out our display of dragons and lanterns outside our classroom and the wonderful display in our school’s foyer.
