What melts ice the fastest?

Check out our science experiment with Mrs. Switzer. We wanted to see what would melt ice the fastest. Mrs. Switzer had a little dinosaur hidden in blocks of ice and we tried to get him out different ways. One group tried a hair dryer, another tried hot water from a kettle, another used salt and Mrs Switzer took a hammer to the block of ice. The hot water worked the fastest and of course Mrs. Switzer did pretty good with that hammer.

3-D Shapes Are Fat Not Flat

We have been playing and exploring 3-D shapes (e.g. sphere, cone, cylinder and cube) by building, stacking and rolling. We have also compared 3-D shapes with 2-D shapes and talked about the 2-D shapes we see in the 3-D shapes. The children brought in 3-D shapes they found at home and we sorted them into groups. We built a tower out of these items and tested if it could remain standing when a fan was turned on to the high level. We had 3-D shapes everywhere!

Hot Cocoa Being Served

The children decided to change our dramatic play centre into a Hot Cocoa/Chocolate Store. They are not only serving up hot cocoa but other drinks and snacks. They have used crumpled brown paper for the hot chocolate and cotton balls for the marshmallows. Check out the snacks and drinks served. We can’t wait for our fun snow day at the end of the month to try some real hot cocoa.

Snow Inquiry

We took a close look at the snow on our playground with our magnifying glasses. Some children said “I see dirt”, “I see crystals” and “It feels soft”. We also were curious if we could paint the snow and took out paint brushes and paint. We painted our names, words and pictures in the snow. We were a little disappointed when these disappeared later when we went back to check on them.
