Check out the plants growing by our classroom window. They are pumpkin plants. We carved a pumpkin and removed the seeds and dried them out. Mrs. Switzer, our science teacher gave us some soil and we planted the pumpkin seeds. We added water and placed them in the sun on a Friday. On Tuesday, we had sprouts already. They have grown so much we are thinking we made need to plant them in a larger container. We are waiting for the pumpkin vines and blossoms. We know this may take us a while.

Pumpkin Muffins
This week we were bakers in room 102. We made pumpkin muffins. Thank you to those families who donated our ingredients. We opened a box of cake mix and added a can of pumpkin. We then scooped the mix into our muffin liners and baked them in the oven at 350 degrees for 25-30 mins. We made a prediction as to whether or not we would like them. After tasting our muffins, we noticed some of us who thought we would not like them actually liked them. What is it that Daniel Tiger says? He says, “Try a new food. It might taste good!”
Patterning
We have been learning about what a pattern is and identifying patterns. A pattern is a sequence of items that repeats over again, for instance, a square, a circle, a square, a circle: or stripes that are red, blue, green, red, blue, green. You and your child can look for patterns around your home or when you are out together. You will see patterns on fabric, wallpaper, floor tiles, clothing, and so on. Lookout for patterns of any kind. We have been creating patterns and discovering ways of reading and recording patterns. A black, white, black, white pattern is also an “AB” pattern. Check out the patterns we wore on our pattern day.
Pumpkin Inquiry
Our pumpkin inquiry has begun. We came up with many inquiry questions after using our senses to observe a large pumpkin. “Can pumpkins be red?” “Do they grow on trees?” “I wonder if it can roll?” “Is it orange on the inside too?” We have carved into a small pumpkin and saw “seeds”, “yucky stuff” and “orange”. Some of us pulled out the insides and we have saved the seeds hoping to plant them in soil to see if room 102 can grow a pumpkin. We are beginning to create a “Pumpkin Patch” in our dramatic play centre and will sell some big, medium and small pumpkins.
Blue Jay Day at Fieldcrest Elementary School
In hopes for a big Blue Jay win this evening as our Blue Jays play the Orioles in their Wild Card game, all of Fieldcrest dressed in their Blue Jay jerseys or hats or the colour blue. Our classroom tally shows 89 wins and 73 losses for their regular season. Yes, we have been keeping track since last spring. We want to begin a playoff tally so our fingers are crossed for a big win tonight. Go Jays go!
