Terry Fox Run

img_49001
The weather cooperated for us this morning as we completed our Terry Fox Run. We ran around the soccer field and collected a popsicle stick for each lap. We each counted our popsicle sticks and then counted our class total. Do you think we made 100 laps? Goodness yes! We ran 114 laps. Thank you to our Falcon families for their donations to raise funds for cancer research. We will have to wait and see if we reach our total of $3000.

Sorting

Here’s what we’ve been up to in math these past couple weeks! We have been getting lots of practice with sorting and classifying. We have been investigating the question: How can we sort things into groups? In class, we have talked about how things are organized and sorted collections of classroom materials in different ways. This helps us to identify similarities and differences. Teaching kids to create rules for organizing things is called sorting. We have been sorting by colour, shape and size. At home, your child can find things that are stored together because they are the same in some way. Your child may be interested in sorting tasks at home, such as sorting clothes for the laundry or putting them away, tidying up toys and books, or sorting the dishes and silverware after they have been washed. img_48871

img_18181Dina and Wally visited rooms 102 and 104 this week and will be visiting again soon. Dina will be teaching positive social skills, conflict and anger management skills, appropriate school behaviours and communication skills. Dina talked about school rules and home rules and will talk about doing your best in school next time.

Rules on the School Bus

We have been talking about how we travel to school: walking, car rider or bus rider. We have also been learning about rules at school. The children created a pretend bus in the classroom. We practiced how to get on a school bus and how to behave as well: quiet voices, backpacks on your lap and no eating or drinking. We also talked about staying in our seats and keeping our hands and head inside. Now we all want to go for a ride on a real bus!

Upcoming Terry Fox Run

img_48351
“Once or twice in a lifetime, someone special comes along who touches our hearts, deepens our faith in humanity, and changes forever the way we look at the world. Someone who exhibits courage, selflessness and tenacity-someone who fights for a dream and works to make it come true. Terry Fox was that kind of person.” The Terry Fox Foundation

Terry said, “Anything is possible if you try”, so on Thursday September 29th the students of Fieldcrest Elementary School will participate in our annual Terry Fox Run/Walk. Students will walk, jog or run around a course on school property to raise money for cancer research. All students will receive a tattoo and a sticker that says “Terry Ran for me. I am running for . . .”. A pledge sheet will be sent home today for students to ask relatives and family friends in person for cash or cheque donations. All pledge sheets and cash/cheques are due back on the day of our event. You can also go to terryfox.org to fundraise online. Our school goal is to raise $3000. Looking forward to a great run day! Thank you for your support!
